Kelvin Sampson with a message after Houston Cougar Men’s Hoops came back to beat Duke in the Final Four

Message from Kelvin Sampson:

To the Houston Cougar Men’s Basketball family, our supporters, and everyone who has been part of this incredible journey:

First and foremost, I want to express my profound gratitude and pride for this team. What we accomplished together in this Final Four is nothing short of extraordinary, and it’s a moment that will forever be etched in the history of Cougar basketball. When we began this season, we knew we had something special. We had the talent, we had the drive, and, most importantly, we had the heart. But even I couldn’t have predicted the kind of grit and resilience this group would display in the face of adversity, and especially during that comeback against Duke.

It’s hard to put into words the emotions I’m feeling right now. To be standing here as a coach, having led this team to the pinnacle of college basketball, is humbling. But this isn’t just about me. This is about every player in that locker room, every assistant coach, and every single person who’s believed in this program since day one.

The game against Duke was one of the most intense, thrilling, and emotional contests I’ve ever been a part of. Duke, as we all know, is a powerhouse—one of the best programs in the country, led by one of the greatest coaches of all time in Mike Krzyzewski. They came out with fire, and for a good part of the game, it looked like they were in control. But I’ve never been prouder of a group of players for the way they never backed down, no matter how high the stakes were, no matter how impossible the situation seemed.

The first half was tough. We struggled with our execution, especially on offense, and Duke took advantage of some of our early mistakes. But I knew we had the ability to turn things around. One of the things we talk about constantly as a team is resilience. We preach to our players that adversity isn’t a sign of failure—it’s an opportunity to show who you truly are. In the locker room at halftime, I didn’t yell. I didn’t panic. I reminded our guys of everything we’ve worked for, everything we’ve been through to get to this moment. We are a team that thrives on adversity, and now was our chance to prove it.

I told them that the game wasn’t over. Not even close. We had 20 minutes left to play, and in those 20 minutes, we had to trust each other, trust the system, and trust ourselves. This team has been tested all season. We’ve had our share of ups and downs, but the one constant has been our belief in each other. And it was that belief that sparked our second-half resurgence.

When we came out for the second half, the energy was palpable. You could feel the shift. The intensity on both ends of the floor was something special. We started getting stops, and our defense turned into offense. Our guys were executing the game plan with precision, and the confidence began to build. As the lead began to shrink, I could see the look in their eyes. They knew they could do it. They knew they could come back.

One of the key turning points for us came with a couple of critical plays from our bench. When we talk about team basketball, it’s not just about the starting five. It’s about everyone. From our point guard to our center, down to the guys who come in off the bench. Our bench has been outstanding all year, and in this game, they played a huge role. When the starting five was fatigued, our bench stepped up and kept the momentum going.

As we continued to chip away at Duke’s lead, I could feel the momentum building. It was like a wave. We were on the verge of something historic. And then, with just under three minutes left in the game, we took the lead. I remember that moment like it was yesterday—watching as our guys fought for every point, battling for every inch on the floor, pushing Duke to the brink. When we got that lead, the entire arena erupted. And I could feel a sense of pride that I can’t even begin to describe.

But the game wasn’t over. Not by a long shot. Duke is a tough team. They didn’t go down without a fight. They had some key plays in the final moments, but we had something they couldn’t match: the heart and the will to win. When we needed to get stops, we got them. When we needed to make free throws, we made them. When it came down to the wire, our guys held their composure.

That final buzzer felt like a victory not just for us, but for every person who has ever believed in Houston Cougar basketball. From the players who wore the jersey before us to the fans who have supported us through thick and thin, this victory was for all of you.

But let’s be clear about one thing: while this win was monumental, this is not the end. We’ve always talked about one goal: winning a national championship. And while this win against Duke was historic, it’s only a step on that journey. We’ve made it to the national championship game, but now we have to finish the job.

I’m incredibly proud of this team, but we’re not satisfied. Not yet. We’ve worked too hard, we’ve sacrificed too much, and we’ve shown too much heart to stop now. We have one more game to play, and our focus remains on the bigger prize—the national championship. We’ve come this far, and we’re not about to let anything get in our way.

Now, to our fans: I cannot thank you enough. Your support has been unwavering, and it’s meant the world to this team. Whether you’ve been with us from the beginning, whether you’re a proud Houston alum, or whether you’re a new fan who’s just jumped on board, your energy has been the driving force behind this run. We hear you. We feel you. And we play for you.

And to my coaching staff: thank you. This group of coaches has been the backbone of this program. We work tirelessly, side by side, to make this team the best it can be. Your dedication, your wisdom, and your commitment to these players have made all the difference.

Finally, to our players: This is your moment. This is your legacy. You’ve earned every second of this. I could not be more proud of each and every one of you. You are a special group, and I am honored to be your coach. But I want you to remember something: this is just the beginning. We’re not done yet. We’ve got one more game, and one more chance to show the world what we’re made of. Keep your heads high, keep your focus sharp, and let’s go finish what we started.

We’ve got work to do, but for now, let’s enjoy this incredible moment. We’ve beaten one of the best teams in the country. We’ve proven that we belong on the biggest stage. And no matter what happens in the next game, we’ve already made history.

So let’s take a deep breath, soak it all in, and get ready for what comes next. We’ve got a national championship to win.

Go Cougars!
