Jon Scheyer’s Opening Statement at the Final Four
Ladies and Gentlemen, Coaches, Players, and Fans,
It is an incredible honor to stand before you today as a representative of Duke Basketball, a program rich in history and tradition, here at one of the most exciting moments of the college basketball season—the Final Four. As a coach and former player for Duke, I’ve had the privilege of experiencing both sides of this incredible journey. Now, as the head coach of this esteemed program, I am humbled to be in this position, surrounded by the best teams, the most passionate fans, and the most skilled players in college basketball.
The Meaning of the Final Four
The Final Four is not just a milestone; it is the culmination of a season’s worth of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. It is a stage where dreams come true, where the bright lights shine the brightest, and where the best of the best are tested under the most intense pressure. To get to this point, it takes more than just talent. It takes heart, discipline, resilience, and the willingness to embrace the challenges that come with the journey. I know this from experience. Whether as a player or as a coach, I’ve seen how each step in this journey requires sacrifice, growth, and a commitment to the team.
To the players who are here today, I want to take a moment to congratulate you. You’ve earned your place among the elite, and this moment, this Final Four, is the culmination of your passion and your work. I know how much it means to each of you, and I also know that the road hasn’t been easy. But this is what makes moments like this so special. You are not just playing for yourself; you are playing for your teammates, your coaches, your school, and your fans. You represent all the hard work, the practice, the sweat, the tears, and the sacrifices that have led you to this point. Enjoy it.
But more than anything, you have an opportunity here—an opportunity to show the world what makes you great, both as basketball players and as individuals.
A Tribute to Duke Basketball
Duke Basketball is built on a foundation of excellence, and I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to reflect on what this program stands for. For over four decades, Coach K has built a legacy that not only defined a program but also elevated the entire sport of college basketball. His leadership, his discipline, and his unwavering belief in the power of teamwork have created a blueprint for success that will live on long after his retirement. I have had the honor of learning from him and working alongside him for many years, and I carry with me every lesson, every conversation, every strategy, and every value he instilled in us.
Duke Basketball is more than just a collection of talented athletes. It is about embodying the values of hard work, commitment, integrity, and selflessness. We take pride in our blue-collar mentality. We strive to be a team that competes with relentless energy, with a focus on improving every single day. We are a program that understands the importance of culture—how a culture of togetherness, accountability, and trust can turn a group of individual athletes into a championship-winning team.
It is an honor to wear the Duke blue and represent everything this program stands for. But what I find most exciting as I look to the future is that Duke Basketball isn’t just about what we’ve achieved—it’s about where we’re going.
The Future of Duke Basketball
As a player, I learned the importance of leadership and embracing responsibility. When I was on the court, I knew that every decision, every pass, every shot, and every defensive possession was crucial—not just for my performance but for the success of the team. As I transitioned from player to coach, I recognized that my role has shifted, but the responsibility remains the same. As head coach, my job is to ensure that the foundation of this program is upheld while also continuing to evolve, innovate, and grow.
Duke Basketball has always been at the forefront of developing future NBA stars, but we also take pride in developing well-rounded individuals who go on to make an impact in all walks of life. Our mission is to not just teach basketball but to teach life lessons. We work every day to instill discipline, resilience, and humility in our players. As coaches, we are not just focused on Xs and Os; we are focused on the person behind the player.
I have seen first-hand how the development of a player at Duke goes far beyond the court. The lessons our players learn in terms of teamwork, leadership, overcoming adversity, and self-discipline translate to their lives well after they leave campus. That’s what makes this place so special. And now, as head coach, I’m committed to ensuring that Duke Basketball continues to grow and evolve while maintaining the integrity and excellence that has defined this program for generations.
The Significance of This Team
This season has been a journey. We have seen highs and lows, moments of greatness and moments of challenge. But what I am most proud of is how this team has embraced every challenge and grown from it. Each one of these young men has brought something special to the table—whether it’s their leadership, their energy, their willingness to sacrifice, or their hunger for greatness. They have embraced the core values that Duke Basketball stands for, and that is why they are here today.
There are few things more special than seeing a group of individuals come together as a team and rise to the occasion. And while the Final Four is a stage for greatness, what matters most is not just how we perform in these games but how we carry ourselves in everything we do. Basketball is about much more than just making shots or winning games. It’s about understanding the importance of teamwork, sacrifice, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
The Importance of Culture and Teamwork
As we step onto the court in this incredible arena, we are not just representing Duke University, but we are representing the entire legacy of this program. The players who wore the blue and white before us have set a standard that we must uphold. Our success here at the Final Four will not just be determined by our talent or skill; it will be determined by how we come together as a team.
As much as I love the individual moments, I know that it is the collective effort—the togetherness, the chemistry, the trust—that will define our success. The foundation of Duke Basketball has always been about team-first mentality, and that’s something we carry with us every day.
I’m proud of our players for embodying this spirit. They have shown maturity and resilience beyond their years. They have been able to overcome adversity and stay true to the team-first mentality that we value so highly. And I have no doubt that these qualities will be on display when we hit the court at the Final Four.
As we prepare to take the court, I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has made this journey possible—our coaching staff, our players, our administration, and, of course, our incredible fans. Your support has been unwavering, and we would not be here without you. To our alumni, the legacy of Duke Basketball lives on through each and every one of you, and your impact on this program will never be forgotten.
To my team: This is your moment. You’ve earned this. Now, it’s time to take it.
We have a long road ahead of us, but I am confident that we are prepared for whatever comes next. We will face challenges, but we will meet them head-on, with determination and resilience. And no matter what the outcome, I am proud to stand alongside you and represent this incredible program.
Thank you, and let’s go take on this Final Four.
